п»їGO TIME: Online Casinos, Sports Betting Live in Michigan Jan. 22; Poker Not Yet Launching.
While Michigan won’t be launching online poker right away, sports betting and real money online casinos are set to launch Friday . On Tuesday, the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) authorized nine operators to go live on Jan. 22 at noon.
“The Michigan Gaming Control Board and the state’s commercial and tribal casinos will begin a new era Jan. 22 with the launch of regulated online gaming and sports betting,” MGCB executive director Richard S. Kalm said in a news release.
“Michigan residents love sports and, judging by inquiries we’ve received, eagerly anticipate using mobile devices to place bets through the commercial and tribal casinos. Online gaming and sports betting will provide the casinos with new ways to engage with customers while the state and local communities will benefit from taxes and payments on wagering revenue.”
No poker yet, but online gaming may pave the way.
Michigan officially legalized online poker, online casinos and sports betting in 2019. So far, PokerStars and Roar Digital/MGM (which runs partypoker US Network ) have been approved in the state.
The good news for poker players is that online casinos in Michigan will at least launch this week. Also, Kalm noted recently that he didn’t expect online poker sites in Michigan to see a significant delay.
Many Pennsylvania online poker players were left frustrated after a lengthy delay between iGaming launch and online poker. The Michigan online operators authorized to begin online gaming on Jan. 22 include:
Tribe/casino Associated platform provider Gaming types offered on Jan. 22 MGM Grand Detroit BetMGM/Roar Digital Casino games; sports betting Bay Mills Indian Community DraftKings Casino games; sports betting Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians William Hill Casino games; sports betting Greektown Casino Penn Sports Interactive/Barstool Sportsbook Sports betting Hannahville Indian Community TwinSpires Casino games; sports betting Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Golden Nugget Online Gaming Casino games; sports betting Little River Band of Ottawa Indians Rush Street Casino games; sports betting MotorCity Casino FanDuel Casino games; sports betting Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians Wynn Casino games; sports betting.
Closing in on launch date.
MGCB officials noted the days between authorization and launch give operators additional time for testing and adjustments before going live.
The MGCB expects to authorize additional operators and platform providers in the coming days and weeks. Agency staff members continue reviewing other submissions to ensure they meet state regulatory requirements .
“We want the public to have confidence when they place wagers,” Kalm said, “and our agency has required the providers to prove they meet Michigan’s standards, which are designed to protect the participants.”
An MGCB spokesperson told USPoker that the board “has approved online poker games at the request of various platform providers. Operators and platform providers will decide which games they will present at launch.”
Despite that, there has been no timeline for a partypoker launch in the state. The MGCB also provisionally approved PokerStars as well. However, the operator is not among those with the initial go-ahead.
Poker fans may be in waiting mode, but a launch at least appears in sight – just not on Jan. 22.

Poker Players Demonstrate Sports Betting Prowess in Winning High Six Figure Score.
For most in the world of poker, sports betting is one of the biggest leaks to plug. It is often said that the late poker legend Stu Ungar’s sports betting absorbed much of what he won on the poker tables because he just wasn’t good at the activity. But, for David ‘ODB’ Baker and Mark Gregorich, their sports betting prowess might have outweighed their poker playing abilities – at least for one season.
Two Major Competitions, Two Major Scores.
In Las Vegas, two of the major casinos host a season-long competition that pits sports bettors against each other testing their handicapping skills. The players pony up an entry fee and, for each week of the NFL season, picked five games against the spread. For each correct pick, the team earned a point; for each push, the team would earn a half point.
Baker and Gregorich were entered into these two contests, the Las Vegas SuperContest at Westgate Las Vegas (for a $1500 buy in) and the Circa Sports Million II (for a $1000 buy in). Each of these competitions had well over 1000 competitors, with the Westgate competition having a field of 1172 entries and the Circa event featuring a whopping 3,148 entry field. In the end, the Baker/Gregorich combination was among the leaders, if not outright leading the events, for most of the season.
In the end, Baker and Gregorich were able to secure the season championship in the Westgate series to win $435,623 in prize money. In the Circa competition, they came up just short in second place, but they were still able to score a $200,000 consolation prize. Along with being the leader at certain milestones in the season-long battle, Baker and Gregorich racked up a grand total of $785,623.
Both Players Have Tremendous Poker Skill.
It isn’t like Baker and Gregorich are fresh off the bus in Las Vegas. Both men are longtime professional poker players who have been phenomenally successful in that endeavor.
Gregorich’s poker career dates to 1995, with his first cash coming at the California State Poker Championship in Omaha Hi/Lo Split. Four years later, Gregorich made his first score at the World Series of Poker in the $2500 Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo Eight or Better event. Although he lacks a major title on his poker resume, Gregorich has earned nearly $2 million in his tournament poker career and probably has been able to make a decent living off cash game play in his career.
Baker’s resume is much more decorated. Called ‘ODB’ to separate him from another successful poker professional with the same name (he is nicknamed ‘Bakes’), Baker’s first tournament poker score was in Reno at a small tournament at Circus Circus in 1993. Strangely, he would disappear from the scene until 2004, when he reemerged on the tournament scene.
In 2019, Baker was the winner of a WSOP bracelet in the $1500 Limit Hold’em event, his second at the most prestigious poker series in the world. That victory came after his win in the World Poker Tour’s L. A. Poker Classic Main Event, which scored him his largest tournament win ever of $1,015,000. In his tournament poker career, ‘Bakes’ has earned almost $6 million in 191 tournament cashes.
Do Poker and Sports Betting Share a Skill Set?
There could very well be a skill set between sports betting and poker that is shared. For some to be successful at both, it takes a great deal of analysis and mental fortitude to come to certain decisions. It could also be said that, for a short-term situation, that there’s just luck involved. Over the course of an entire season in the National Football League – or in an entire year of intense poker tournament competition – it is more likely that skill takes hold rather than luck, however.
Congratulations to both Baker and Gregorich on their success in these events. It might be worth taking a flyer on their wagers – both on the poker tables and on the sports boards – for the coming year!

PokerStars launches online poker in Michigan; FoxBet sports betting also approved.

Legal online poker is now live in Michigan.
The Michigan Gaming Control Board announced Friday that it authorized Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians and platform providers PokerStars for online gaming and FoxBet for online sports betting to launch at 11 a.m.
PokerStars is the first operator in Michigan to offer peer-to-peer poker games online, MGCB executive director Richard Kalm said. Michiganders are only permitted to play against others within state lines, although interstate play is expected to be approved later this year, according to the MGCB.
Michigan is the fifth state to allow real money poker games.
FoxBet is the 11th online sportsbook approved in Michigan after 10 launched Jan. 22. Meanwhile, there are now 10 authorized online casinos after the MGCB approved PokerStars and Barstool’s online casino Friday. Barstool’s sportsbook launched last Friday.
FoxBet is offering a free $100 in site credit after making a first deposit (minimum $10).
“The key differentiators for us have always been our valued partnership with the FOX Corporation and the strength of our industry leading FOX Bet Super 6 product combined with the PokerStars business, and we plan to lean into these unique assets as we launch in Michigan,” FOX Bet CEO Kip Levin said in a release. “Behind FOX Bet Sportsbook, PokerStars and Stars Casino, customers create one account for all three apps, unlocking a wide variety of exciting and entertaining options to supercharge the experience for our Michigan audience.”
Online gaming and sports betting are expected to be an avenue for Michigan casinos to make up for substantial losses incurred in 2020 while also generating millions in tax revenue for the state.
By most accounts, online gaming is off to a booming start.
Michigan and Virginia both launched online gambling late last week and combined for 7.5 million online gambling transactions across 400,000 accounts, according to data from GeoComply, which provides geolocation tracking services for the internet gaming industry.
Michigan and Virginia accounted for 25 percent of the overall volume last weekend across the U.S. market, which encompasses 17 states with legal online betting.
“There were no real reports of any outages -- maybe some lag here and there -- but nothing overly out of the norm in that regard. And also you had a great weekend for an opening. You had the conference championship games and you had the added bonus of a high-profile UFC fight (Dustin Poirier vs. Conor McGregor). So all in all, with the exception of maybe starting on Super Bowl Friday or the first round of the NCAA Tournament, you’re not going to get a much better opening slot.”

Michigan Online Sports Betting and Gaming Launch Date Expected Shortly.

The wait for Michigan online sports betting, casino gaming and real-money poker is in its final days.
The date and initial operator list for Michigan’s long-awaited online gaming launch will be announced by Jan. 18 at the latest, said Michigan Gaming Control Board Executive Director Richard Kalm at a meeting Tuesday. Assuming all approvals are met, Michigan residents and visitors will be able to deposit and wager with the first wave of online operators by the end of the month.
“We’re very close. I wish I could give an exact day and time, but each day that changes,” Kalm said. “We’re gathering information daily. So we’re very close. That’s the best answer I can give right now.”
After more than a year of waiting, Michigan’s online sports betting launch appears it will be ready to go before the Feb. 7 kickoff to this year’s Super Bowl, historically the single highest-grossing event for U.S. sportsbooks.
Michigan Launch Comes into Focus.
Though officials at Tuesday’s board meeting wouldn’t disclose publicly the go live date or initial approved operators, a timeline for online gaming in Michigan is coming into focus.
After MGCB officials grant the go live date, which could come in the next few days, it will still be four or five additional days after that until the first operators can accept bets, Kalm said, during which time mobile operators must pass final testing and certification. Michigan’s 2019 sports betting law also requires at least one of the state’s commercial casinos and one of its Native American casinos earn their respective online wagering licenses before betting can begin.
Kalm reaffirmed Tuesday the exact timeline remains in flux, but that should still allow the first bets to be placed before the end of January.
In the meantime, Michigan bettors can begin downloading sportsbook and iGaming apps ahead of the launch. Michigan’s three commercial casinos along with a dozen tribal casinos have already formalized online sports betting and iGaming partnerships.
Partner operators such as DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, Barstool Sports, PointsBet and William Hill are among the dozen or so sportsbooks expected to go live on or near the official launch date. Retail sports betting began in March 2020, but multiple casino closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic have handicapped wagering options and fueled interest in the online launch, which is projected to make up as 90% or more of total betting handle.
The 10th-largest state by population, Michigan is set to be one of the largest sports betting markets in the country. It will be the second most populated state with both online sports betting and iGaming, trailing only Pennsylvania.
Long Rollout Nears Conclusion.
Signed into law by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in December 2019, Michigan’s package of online sports betting, poker, iGaming and daily fantasy regulations underwent more than a year of review, rulemaking and certification. Michigan regulators were required by state law to craft rules, take public comment, submit a financial impact statement and receive final sign off from a state legislative body, a process that wasn’t completed until last month.
Kalm said officials turned around the required gaming rules faster than any other set of regulations in his 13 years with the MGCB. Officials also expedited occupational, vendor and supplier licenses, a process Kalm said still took significant time as officials had to not only write and earn certification for their proposed rules, but then license three commercial and 12 tribal gaming operators as well as their affiliates and partners.
