Exotic Bets.
Now that you know what the three basic bets are, you can start building exotic bets that are based on them.
Parlay.
A parlay is two or more bets combined to increase your winnings. Sportsbooks and casinos have different rules on parlays and how you can play them.
The only catch? You must win all your bets in a parlay to win. If you go 8 for 9 on a parlay, you lose.
Teaser.
Sportsbooks allow you to adjust the spreads or point totals on parlay bets through teasers. For football, they offer 6, 6.5, and 7 point teasers. This means your Ohio State and Pittsburgh parlay will have more favorable numbers.

п»їNorth Dakotans may vote on legalizing sports betting in 2022.
BISMARCK — The people of North Dakota may get to decide whether they want to legalize sports betting in the state in the 2022 general election.
On Wednesday, Jan. 27, the North Dakota House Judiciary Committee heard testimony regarding House Bill 1234, which would legalize sports betting in North Dakota. Rep. Jim Kasper, R-Fargo, a sponsor of the bill, opened his testimony in support by stating that the bill as it is written will not work and that it will be heavily amended. The new draft, which will include “the nuts and bolts” for how sports betting would work in the state if it is approved, will be presented to the committee next week, he said.
In addition to the bill, Kasper is drafting a constitutional amendment that would allow North Dakotans to vote on whether they want to legalize sports betting in the state.
“The people of North Dakota are already sports betting,” Kasper said during the session. “They find ways to do it. I’m saying we legalize it in our state, and we tax it so that we have the benefit of what’s already happening for the citizens of our state and our state coffers.”
In 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court voted to lift a federal ban on sports gambling. Twenty states now allow some form of sports betting, while several more, including South Dakota, have voted to allow sports betting but have not yet implemented it.
A 2019 bill to legalize sports betting in North Dakota passed the House but failed in the state Senate.
“The goal of the bill is not to encourage gambling,” Kasper said. “The goal of the bill is to say we’re going to get in with the rest of the states.
“(Sports betting) is now open to all 50 states," he said. "What I’ve found in my research is about half of the states have already implemented sports betting and it is increasing dramatically.”
Rep. Bernie Satrom, R-Jamestown, asked Kasper if he had an estimate for the social cost of allowing sports betting. Kasper responded by saying it is his belief that, because sports betting is a game of thought and skill, it would be less attractive to compulsive gamblers or gambling addicts than other types of gaming.
“I would suspect that people who do sports betting are not, in many cases, the compulsive type of people compared with e-tabs or slot machines,” Kasper said. “That has a magic about drawing people in who have a problem. When you’re sports betting, it’s more of a logical thing.
“It’s a process you have to think about before you do something," he said. "It’s not where you walk into a casino or walk in a bar and stick your money in a machine and there you go.”
Because the bill is being rewritten, Kasper did not discuss the details of the bill with the judiciary committee. But they did allow testimony in support of and in opposition to sports betting.
Kasper gave the only testimony in support of the bill while several people gave testimony in opposition. Those opposed included North Dakota State University President Dean Bresciani, North Dakota University System Chancellor Mark Hagerott, and representatives from the Family Policy Alliance of North Dakota, the North Dakota Catholic Conference, the United Tribes Gaming Association and Spirit Lake Tribe Gaming Commission.
Kasper stated that the upcoming bill would likely include betting on college sports in addition to professional sports. Both Bresciani and Hagerott spoke against allowing gambling on college sports and urged that the bill allow betting only on professional sports.
“I believe deeply in the collegiate model of amateur athletics and that because of that purposeful focus, it complements a collegiate environment,” Bresciani said during the session. “That said, it goes without saying that the collegiate model is constantly under pressure from groups with self-serving interest in professionalizing college sports. That has never been the case more so than it is today. I’m concerned that legalized betting on college athletics would very much put the collegiate model further at risk.”
UTGA Executive Director Cynthia Monteau testified in opposition to HB1234, urging that gaming remain exclusive to Tribal casinos. She said Tribal casinos generate more than $300 million for the state economy and provide more than 3,000 full-time equivalent jobs.
While the UTGA is opposed to legalizing sports betting, no tribal casinos in the state currently offer sports betting.
“Gaming is, in most cases, our sole source of revenue for jobs and economic development,” Monteau said during the hearing. “HB1234 is an expansion of gaming outside of Tribal casinos, and we are adamantly opposed.”

William Hill Sportsbooks Continue Domination In Nevada Casinos.
William Hill recently received a slew of recommendations from the Nevada Gaming Control Board to operate sportsbooks throughout the state of Nevada. On Jan. 9, the international sportsbook operator received a recommendation for approval to operate sportsbooks at the following casinos:
Aquarius (Laughlin) Arizona Charlie’s Decatur (Las Vegas) Arizona Charlie’s Boulder (Las Vegas) Eldorado (Reno) Jerry’s Nugget (Las Vegas) Montbleau (Reno) Stratosphere (Las Vegas)
William Hill operates more than 100 sportsbooks throughout Nevada. Most of the new sportsbooks on their roster have been expected. Last year they signed a deal to operate Golden Entertainment sportsbooks.
Aquarius , Arizona Charlie’s (both), and the Stratosphere are all owned by Golden Entertainment. In addition to casino sportsbooks, William Hill already has sports wagering kiosks inside approximately 80 Golden Entertainment pubs and taverns around the state including all PT’s Pub locations.
William Hill also signed a deal to operate Eldorado Resorts sportsbooks across the US. Montbleau and Eldorado in Reno are both owned by Eldorado Resorts casinos. William Hill already operates sportsbooks at their Circus Circus , Silverado , and Tropicana Laughlin casinos.
The surprise casino in the slew of approvals is Jerry’s Nugget .
William Hill is taking over independent sportsbooks.
There will be one fewer independent sportsbook operator in Las Vegas when William Hill takes over sportsbook operations at Jerry’s Nugget. In fact, the deal with Golden Entertainment cuts the number of independently operated sportsbooks on the Vegas Strip by a third .
The Stratosphere was one of three independent sportsbook operators on the Vegas Strip. When William Hill takes over the Stratosphere, Wynn (and Encore) and Treasure Island will be the only independent sportsbook operators remaining on the Vegas Strip.
It’s becoming more difficult for sports bettors to find different odds and wagering opportunities. The majority of sportsbooks on the Vegas Strip are operated by two companies. MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment operate sportsbooks in 17 of 26 casinos.
For the time being, William Hill operates 7 of 11 casinos in downtown Las Vegas. That number will decrease when the Stevens Group begins operations later this year.
Around Las Vegas, Boyd Gaming operates sportsbooks in 10 casinos, while Station Casinos operates 18 properties in Las Vegas including Fiesta and Wildfire.
Remaining independent sportsbooks in Las Vegas.
Even though consolidation is creating large sportsbook operations, there are still a handful of independent sportsbook operators in Las Vegas. Sports bettors in Las Vegas can still find unique wagering opportunities at the following casinos.
Golden Nugget South Point and Rampart (odds originate at South Point) Treasure Island Westgate Wynn.
William Hill is expanding across America, not just Nevada.
The European bookmaker expanded to the US when they acquired Lucky’s, Leroy’s, and Cal-Neva. They now operate more than 100 sportsbooks of all sizes and a mobile wagering app in Nevada. However, Nevada was just the beginning of expansion for William Hill.
More recently they’ve been signing deals with casino operators and racetracks to operate sportsbooks in other states as sports wagering is legalized in other states. William Hill currently operates sportsbooks in the following states outside of Nevada:
Deleware Mississippi New Jersey Pennsylvania Rhode Island West Virginia.
William Hill is the only sportsbook operator to operate in every state that offers legal sports betting. The partnerships with Eldorado and Golden Entertainment are just the beginning of William Hill’s expansion across the US.


Current Sports Betting.
Located on the furthest north end of the strip, the Stratosphere is the cutoff point leading to downtown. Open since 1996, it will remain one of the first great sights people notice when flying into Las Vegas. With its high observation tower and thrilling rides that sit atop it, it makes for a great tourist destination. It’s kind of funny how awesome it looks because when you actually get right up to it you see what a shady area it’s in, and its sportsbook is only a moderate upgrade from that.
Stratosphere Sportsbook.
The sportsbook side has about 40 leather chairs, some leather couches, and a few high tables and chairs in the back. The seating is comfortable and it’s a non-smoking area , but it is all downhill from there. The Stratosphere is a low-end smoky casino and that carries right into the sportsbook.
There are TVs spread all around. Most of them are small but a couple are big screens with poor picture and sound quality. It felt too much like I was watching the games on mute. The 12 racebook TVs are perpendicular to the sportsbook with seating of 3Г—6 of desk rows, each with their own TV.
In the corner of the two books is the cashier where you will find pamphlets featuring all of that day’s action along with lines on upcoming events, futures, and whatever props that may be going. The day to day lines themselves is not extra beneficial or detrimental than any other book. The one discrepancy you might find is on futures. As strip bettors are primarily tourists that like taking any action home with them, they are more than glad to accept a weak payout. If you are set on not getting ripped off on futures, you will have to venture out into the local sportsbooks but there’s no guarantee their lines will be much better.
Size and Location.
It doesn’t hold a ton of people, but its seating is spaciously spread out and convenient to access. When you come down the escalator from inside one of the last free parking garages on the strip, the sportsbook is right there allowing it to serve as a quick place to drop in, bet, and leave. There is a bathroom nearby, and while it is not adjacent to slots or table games, it’s still noisy enough to make its already poor sound quality even more noticeable.
Traffic and Viewing Ability.
Most people who come here will be either be locals or hotel guests, so traffic shouldn’t be too bad. It could get close to capacity during popular events like NFL Sunday or March Madness college basketball, but otherwise, this will be a relaxing environment to watch a game in. Given the poor sound, perhaps a little too relaxing.
The betting board is a significant problem. It is behind the cashier and out of the main TV section’s way. That part is fine, but the lettering is really small and there is a huge pole blocking your view from a lot of seats. This provides great incentive to keep a pamphlet with you, but since lines are liable to change after the pamphlets are printed, you’ll want to verify what they currently are when you bet.
Since the racebook TVs are small, you can’t see them too well by turning your head from the sportsbook. Plus, there is another huge pole blocking some vision there too.
The Stratosphere is behind on the times as well. Just about every strip sportsbook lets you easily open an account right inside so that you may download their sports betting app allowing you access to every line. They do not, and there was no mention of that having one anytime soon. In addition, live betting, which is betting on games already in progress is unavailable, and I’m not holding my breath about that being added either.
Drinks at Stratosphere Sportsbook.
Getting free drinks inside the sportsbook used to be easy, but not anymore. Now you need to bet a substantial amount just to get one drink ticket – $100 on sports and $25 for horses. It would be nice to see the lower level sportsbooks be a little more flexible about drinks, but they aren’t. And $25 for horses is among the most expensive on the strip. Still, these are only rules, not laws. If you can get friendly with a cashier or cocktail server, perhaps you can talk your way into some extra tickets.
Casino at Stratosphere.
Like any casino, there are endless slots. Regarding table games, $5 minimum bets are easy to find. And while their selection of games is not especially wide, they do offer single deck and double blackjack along with 10x odds on Craps, Crapless Craps, and Bonus Craps.
Dining and Bars.
Adjacent to the sportsbook and facing it is a small video poker bar . If you want to get some cheap drinks while you watch without having to bet, this provides a solid alternative. Just slip a $20 in and play it slow. Around the rest of the casino, you will find numerous other bars and lounges.
The restaurants here might be better than one would guess, with the nicer ones being reasonably priced and all bunched together. The highlight restaurant is Top of the World, located high above inside the observation tower. Now this one is overpriced, but it’s a steakhouse and constantly rotates, providing you with a great view of all of Las Vegas . As far as getting some eats nearby the sportsbook, there is nothing but a Starbucks.
Hotel at Stratosphere.
If you are looking for cheap, this might be the one. Since this hotel is surrounded by so many seedy motels where Vegas’ most down and out go to do…things, they have to practically give the rooms away and they are not half bad. The standard rooms are what they are, but the bathrooms have been renovated and there are plenty of rooms with great views.
Stratosphere Sportsbook Rewards.
Comps and player points are difficult to attain in sportsbooks. Here you get $1 back for every $300 you bet on sports, and $1 for every $25 bet on horses. This is actually relatively generous compared to other sportsbooks.
Regardless if you are interested in comps, it is still recommended to swipe your card whenever you bet because that proves a record of your bet. Meaning if you manage to place a winning bet and then lose the ticket, you will still be paid since the action was recorded on your card.
Wrap-Up.
You can do worse than the Stratosphere, but you can certainly do a whole lot better. We didn’t expect much when we walked in, and my expectations were met. Considering the sportsbook has been remodeled it’s embarrassing how hard it is to read the betting board and how poor the sound quality is. Despite the faint smell of secondhand smoke, it’s relaxing and comfortable to sit in, but this is a sportsbook. Not a meditation room.

Decimal odds.
The decimal odds format, also known as European odds, represents the multiple of your stake that you will get back for winning a bet. While these are more common at overseas betting exchanges, you may see these at US betting sites. For example, betting on a market priced at 2.5 means you would win two and a half times your stake if your bet were to win. This means you’d win $2.50 for every $1 you wager.
Another example of decimal odds in action would be betting on NHL game with odds of 9.0. A $10 stake on odds of 9.0 would earn a total payout of $90 with $80 being won from the sportsbook and your initial $10 stake being returned.

Teaser bets are usually available for basketball and football events. A teaser allows bettors to combine their bets on two different games and adjust the point spreads for the two games. However, the better will see a lower return in the event that their teams win.
Round robin.
A round robin is essentially a series of parlay bets. For instance, a round robin made up of three teams will consist of three two-team parlay bets.
Propositions.
Propositions bets are sometimes referred to as “prop” bets. These bets focus more on the outcome of a certain event happening during a sports game such as “which team will score the first touchdown?” or “how many field goals will team x score?”

For any given event, there are a certain number of outcomes. Take rolling a dice for instance. If someone rolls a dice, there are six possible outcomes. Therefore, if you bet that the person rolls a ‘one’, there is a 16.67% chance that will happen. What betting odds merely do is present how likely the event is to happen. Bookies most frequently in the UK do this as a fraction, i.e. 4/7, whilst the vast majority also offer the ability to view them as decimals. Again, let us talk you through them. Using Betting Odds to Calculate Probability.
Whenever you see two numbers separated by a trailing slash, i.e. 10/1, this is known as fractional odds. From this, you can calculate how likely a given event is to happen with a calculation. For ease of explanation, let’s replace the numbers with letters i.e. 4/1 becomes A/B. Here is the calculation: Probability (%) = B / (A+B).
Hooray! We’re making progress. Given a fraction, we can now tell how likely (the probability) what we’re going to bet on will happen. Now let’s figure out how much money can be won using betting odds.
Using Betting Odds to Calculate Winnings.
Betting odds allow you to calculate how much money you will win if you make a bet. Let’s use the same examples as before, with the same replacement of numbers for letters, i.e. 4/1 becomes A/B. Quite simply, for every value of B that you bet, you will win A, plus the return of your stake.
9/1 for every ВЈ1 you bet, you will win ВЈ9. 4/1 for every ВЈ1 you bet, you will win ВЈ4. 1/1 for every ВЈ1 you bet, you will win ВЈ1. 1/4 for every ВЈ4 you bet, you will win ВЈ1.
What About Decimals?
Decimals are far more common on exchanges, such as Betfair, but all leading betting sites do give you the option to view betting odds in this format. They are an alternative to seeing betting odds in the fraction format, and in our opinion, are easier to work out. Here is the calculation: winnings = (odds * stake) – stake. Let’s illustrate it with some examples.
9.0 can be calculated as (9.0 * £10 stake) – £10 stake = £80 winnings. 4.0 can be calculated as (4.0 * £10 stake) – £10 stake = £30 winnings. 2.5 can be calculated as (2.5 * £10 stake) – £10 stake = £15 winnings. 1.25 can be calculated as (1.25 * £10 stake) – £10 stake = £2.50 winnings.

Decimal Odds Versus Fractional Odds.
In truth, one isn’t better than the other but there is certainly a trend emerging towards decimal odds. Historically fractional odds were used in the UK, especially on racetracks and on the high street. There are two key differences. Generally, decimal odds are easier to understand. Based on this, there has a movement to attract more people to horse racing by making it more accessible to the average punter. How Decimal Odds Work.
Decimal odds (aka European odds, digital odds, or continental odds) are popular in continental Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. These are a bit easier to understand and work with. The favorites and underdogs can be spotted instantaneously by looking at the numbers.
The decimal odds number represents the amount one wins for every $1 wagered. For decimal odds, the number represents the total payout, rather than the profit. In other words, your stake is already included in the decimal number (no need to add back your stake), which makes its total payout calculation easier.
The total (potential) return on a stake can be calculated as:
For instance, one of the renowned betting websites priced the candidates to win the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election. Here, we list the decimal odds for the candidates and the biggest long shot among the candidates listed by the bookmaker.
Donald Trump: 4.00 Joe Biden: 1.3.
These numbers merely represent the amount one could win against each $1 put at stake. Therefore, if one bets $100 on Donald Trump to be re-elected as president, this person could make a total payout of $400 ($100 x 4.00). This amount includes the initial stake of $100, giving a net profit of $300.
Similarly, a bettor could make a total payout of $130 ($100 x 1.3) if they successfully bet $100 on Joe Biden. Deducting $100 from this return gives the bettor the net profit earned.

American Style Sports Betting Odds.
Most online sportsbooks will list their odds in what is called “American Odds”. There are a couple different versions of sports betting odds, but these American Odds are the most common odds used. Reading and understanding sports betting odds can bet a little confusing to beginners, so we have provided an example below using two NFL football teams:
American Odds.
The number shown in the bracket represents the odds. The American Odds have two components to them, the first being the positive or negative sign, and the second being the number that follows the sign.
The next step is figuring out exactly how much the bet pays out, which is where the numbers in the odds come into play.
A listed odd with a – sign in front of it, such as the -140 in our example above, shows us how much money you would need to wager in order to win $100. So using the -140, this would show us that you would need to bet $140 in order to win $100 in profits. You can easily substitute the $100 bet for a $10 bet by moving the decimal place over one spot, showing us that you would need to wager $14 in order to win $10 in profits.

Decimal style odds are used mostly in Europe, and are pretty easy to understand. To calculate the decimal style odds all you will need to do is simply multiply the amount you wish to wager by the decimal odds shown and you will get your payout. For example it may look something like this:

If you wanted to place a $10 wager on the USA at 2.40 you would simply need to multiply your $10 wager by the 2.40 odds (10 x 2.40) to find out that the payout is $24. It is important to realize that with decimal style odds it includes the amount you wagered, so to find out profits you would need to subtract your wager ($24 – $10) to find out your potential payout is $14 in profits.
If you wanted to place a $10 wager on Brazil you would again just multiply $10 x 1.55 to find out that you would win $15.50 total or $5.50 in profits.
Decimal style betting odds are very simple to understand, but you won’t see them displayed in many North American sportsbooks. With that said, most online betting sites will allow you to chose the style of betting odds you want displayed, with American odds set as the default.

The more skill points you accumulate, the harder it will be to beat the game A.I.
In order to get the pitcher for the A.I. to throw almost everything across the plate, you need to wear them out.
Take as many pitches as you can, working deep into each count. This trick doesn't guarentee a win, but I have yet to get negative points.
When you see the pitcher begin to sweat, an exlamation point will appear over the pitcher's head when a pitch is about to be thrown.
That means its coming right across the plate at 74 MPH. A perfect home run ball if you hit the ball correctly.
Hint - Tennis Pro Tips.
To do this trick: When you select which type of game to play, "Single Game", "Best of 3", or "Best of 5", it shows you which players are at which locations on the court. Your Mii's default position is the left side server. On the same side, use the A Button and click on the figure standing at the net. It will change from the "?" shadow to your Mii (assuming you are playing alone). Then proceed to pick which duration of tennis you'd like to play.
Note that you should ensure that you win, otherwise you may be at risk to lose double the amount of skill points if you lose.
Bowling Ball Color Change.
You can select your bowling ball color before you bowl by using the directional pad. When you reach the screen warning, 'Make sure nothing is around you', hit the A button and hold the D-pad (until the alley UI appears) to choose your color:
Mii Parade.
You can add more Miis in Parade and audiences. Use Wii Sports to do it:
1. Make about 10 Mii's.
2. Transfer those Mii's to your Wiimote.
3. Delete the Mii's that are transfered to the Wiimote out of the plaza.
5 When given the option of which Mii to use during gameplay choose the option to get the Mii from the Wii Remote.
6. After viewing the Mii's on the Wiimote back out by using the B button.
7. Exit out of Wii Sports and back onto the Wii Menu.
Now check the Mii parade and all 10 of the Miis that were on the Wiimote are in the parade. Now if you dont want the Miis on the Wiimote just delete them off. These Miis will now show up in all Wii Sports games that have an audience.
Hint - 91 Strike.
In the "Power Throws" training game for bowling, you might notice 2 red buttons at the end of the alley - 1 left and 1 right. When you get to the final bowl for 91 pins, you can bowl the ball along the top of the barrier on either side and hit this button.
Move your Mii all the way to the left or right, and turn the aim 2 or 3 clicks towards the barrier. Let go of the ball at the highest point possible, with just a bit of spin to keep the ball on the barrier.
If successful, you will hear a click, the screen will shake and all the pins will fall down.
Hint - Barrier Strike.
For the 'Power Throws' training game in bowling, turn either left or right until there are four red bars pointing in the direction of your choice across the bowling line. This may not always work, especially with the big numbers of pins but this will almost always give you a strike. Feel free to experiment with different numbers of red bars across the bowling line since three and four almost always work for me.
Tennis court.
At the warning screen after selecting characters, hold down 2.
Special Bowling Ball.
You must achieve pro level on the bowling game.

While based in Russia in the 1990s, NPR's Anne Garrels followed developments in the "real Russia" from the provincial town of Chelyabinsk. Returning 10 years later, much has changed. This series charts this transformation.
Russia continues to have a health crisis.
Life expectancy for Russian men — 59 years — remains astonishingly low, and well below current levels in Pakistan and Bangladesh. That has combined with anemic fertility levels to cause a drop in population. According to United Nations predictions, Russia's population could fall by 30 percent by the middle of the century.
President Dmitry Medvedev is determined to reverse the trend. His government offers birth bonuses of $9,500 — and the government is investing more into public health.
Gains Made In Chelyabinsk.
Chelyabinsk is in the middle of a baby boom — a result of recent economic improvements. Dr. Eduard Reebin, chairman of the Regional Legislatures Medical Commission, says care is much better than it was 10 years ago.
"There's no comparison," Reebin says. "Of course, we still don't have what we want — no country does — but under Putin, there is a stable health program."
Reebin recalls desperate times 10 years ago when he had to barter and scrounge for basic medicines.
"The factories could not pay their share of the health insurance, so they would give me pipes," he says. "I would go to another region and trade them for rice, bring the rice back here, and sell it just to keep the hospital open."
Those frightening times are over. But the system is still short of specialists, and diagnostic tools like CT scans and MRI are still rare. The wait for an MRI scan can be more than two months.
Remaining Deficiencies.
After a meeting with regional officials, the head of Hospital No. 8 rants about a tangled and unresponsive medical bureaucracy. Dr. Mikhail Verbitksy is a generally jovial fellow, but he is struggling to pay his staff a decent wage so they will stay in the profession.
He has to skimp on physical improvements to pay his staff a little extra, but the hospital — built 60 years ago — is in terrible shape. There are no proper hospital beds or call buttons. There's a shortage of operating rooms. The hospital is overcrowded, with twice as many patients as originally planned for.
The number of babies born there annually has jumped in the past year from 1,200 to 2,000 — good news for Russia, but a real strain on the hospital.
Tanya Kelleher, who gave birth to twins, says her doctors were well-trained, but the overall conditions were appalling.
"Horrible, horrible," Kelleher says. "A room with 10 women in it. You have to go to a pharmacy and buy everything — stitching, cotton wool. Everything you need during the birth, you buy and pay for. We were told to bring our own sugar. If you are a patient in a hospital, you better have a friend who can bring you food."
In theory, medical care is free, but medicines are not — except for certain groups like invalids and pensioners. Repeated complaints in the media indicate that these groups are not getting the medicines they need and have been promised. Dr. Reebin acknowledges that this is an ongoing problem.
"No one will be turned away, but there will always be medicines which are not available at the hospital, and the patient will have to purchase them at a pharmacy," he says.
Clinics Struggle To Fill The Gap.
What has dramatically changed in the past 10 years is the development of private clinics like Elena Konaeva's reproductive health center. A much-respected doctor, Konaeva specializes in infertility and now has 3,000 patients.
"We have good doctors in Chelyabinsk," Konaeva says, "but they are spread out over various hospitals. You can get a good diagnosis at one hospital, good surgery at another. We try to link all that together and make it more comfortable."
Given the system of under-the-table payments in state hospitals for expedited care and the provision of certain treatment, care from these clinics is not that much more expensive than so-called "free" care.
"Take in vitro [fertilization]," Konaeva says. "You usually have to pay for this even in the state system. Until this year, there was no state hospital here in Chelyabinsk that could do in vitro, and state doctors here still have little experience. We work with a hospital in another city if patients need this treatment. It's the best in Russia."
Konaeva's clinic — spotlessly clean with a rare air of efficiency — is comparable to any Western doctor's office. Many of her physicians, like urologist Grigory Bogdashov, are specialists in the state system who work here one day a week.
"At the state hospital, I earn $200 a month, $400 with overtime," Bogdashov says. "Here, I can make $200 in three hours of work, without the mess, the pressure and the horrible conditions."
Dr. Konaeva offers her patients preventive care, which she says the state system can no longer afford. Mammograms, for instance, are not routine and are done only when a problem arises. She sees too many underweight babies because of smoking, alcohol and inadequate prenatal care. She worries that too many Russian women still use abortion as a means of birth control. There are still more abortions than live births, with the consequent impact on fertility rates.
"It's a sad statistic," Konaeva says, "but a true one."
Five years ago, this clinic took an initial investment of $150,000 and had a vision. Dr. Konaeva has made back her investment. Her dream was realized. And behind her, lining the wall, are snapshots of Chelyabinsk's next generation — the babies she has helped bring into the world.
