One of New Jersey’s rising stars, Jihaad Campbell will play his final season of high school football in the Sunshine State.
A first team All-State defensive lineman in 2020, the Timber Creek junior announced via Twitter on Saturday that he would be transferring to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.
IMG Academy was the No. 1 team in MaxPreps’ last national rankings released on Dec. 20. The Ascenders went 8-0, with half of their wins coming against out-of-state competition.
“It was a family decision. We really looked hard at the program and thought hard, how they develop players - not only football, but young successful men,” Campbell told NJ Advance Media.
“I looked at it and looked at it, and it just led me to this moment.”
Campbell said he’ll leave for IMG on Jan. 4.
Thankful and Blessed to announce that for the remainder of my Highschool career I’ll be attending, IMG ACADEMY #Brotherhood.
At 6-foot-3, 215 pounds, Campbell proved be a dominant player on both sides of the ball. In seven games, he led Timber Creek with 52 tackles, nine sacks and two fumble recoveries, while also making 19 catches for 321 yards and two touchdowns.
As a sophomore, Campbell began to shows signs that he could be an impact player. He had 41 tackles (32 solo), two tackles for loss, two sacks, a pass defense, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in nine games.
Campbell holds better than two dozen scholarship offers and released his Top 12 in November - South Carolina, Penn State, Clemson, Michigan State, Rutgers, Oregon, Virginia Tech, Boston College, Tennessee, Michigan, West Virginia and Duke. Kentucky, Florida State and Ohio State also made offers following the announcement.
“We are certainly sending them one of the best from Jersey,” Timber Creek coach Brian Wright said. “He can compete with anyone from any geographic region. He’s a kid that will be playing on Sundays at some point.
“He’s just scratching the surface, too. He’s so easily coached and accepts coaching better than any young person I’ve been around. No matter how hard you coached him, he did it with a smile on his face. He really enjoyed the game of football and that’s led to his success.
“He’s a byproduct of the work that he puts in and is naturally gifted, but never rested on his laurels or tried to get by on natural talent. He was the hardest worker in the room.”
In recent years, two other South Jersey standouts also transferred to IMG - Camden lineman Cesar Ruiz and wide receiver/defensive back Corey Palmer.
Ruiz, who went on to play at Michigan, was a first-round pick of the New Orleans Saints in last year’s NFL Draft. Palmer, who spent his junior year at IMG before returning to Camden due to COVID concerns, recently signed a National Letter of Intent to play at Temple.
“I left a good mark in Jersey, but down there I’ll have to get to work,” Campbell said. “No one knows me down there. I have to get the work in and create bonds, create a family with everyone down there.
“There’s definitely going to be a lot of competition going on. There’s going to be a lot of five-star (recruits) and different types of players. I’ll be going up against 6-5, 6-6 guys in practice every day and that’s something you don’t find a lot up here.”
For Wright, the decision brought mixed feelings.
“Jihaad is one of the best young people I’ve ever had the opportunity to be around,” Wright said. “With that, I wish him nothing but the best. And if this is the best - what he and his family feel is best - I fully support him. Selfishly, it’s a gut punch. He’s one of the best kids in the area and we were hoping to have him for one more year.
“He’s the epitome of the type of kids we have at Timber Creek - positive on the football field, in the classroom and in the community. With all of the craziness throughout the year, he was a kid that always had a smile on his face and enjoyed playing the game. No matter where you put him on the field, he made football plays and was a true pleasure to coach.”
