If you’re new to betting, one of the first things you should do is learn how betting odds work. It’s critically important because it allows you to understand how likely an event is to happen, and what your potential winnings will be. At first, it may appear confusing, however, read our guide and let us explain it to you.
In gambling, odds represent the ratio between the amounts staked by parties to a wager or bet. Thus, odds of 3 to 1 mean the first party (the bookmaker) stakes three times the amount staked by the second party (the bettor).
What is Probability?
The most basic level, betting provides you with the ability to predict the outcome of a certain event, and if your prediction is correct, you will win money. For any given event, there are a certain number of outcomes. Take rolling a dice for instance. If someone rolls a dice, there are six possible outcomes. Therefore, if you bet that the person rolls a ‘one’, there is a 16.67% chance that will happen. What betting odds merely do is present how likely the event is to happen. Bookies most frequently in the UK do this as a fraction, i.e. 4/7, whilst the vast majority also offer the ability to view them as decimals. Again, let us talk you through them. All will become clear.
Using Betting Odds to Calculate Probability.
Whenever you see two numbers separated by a trailing slash, i.e. 10/1, this is known as fractional odds. From this, you can calculate how likely a given event is to happen with a calculation. For ease of explanation, let’s replace the numbers with letters i.e. 4/1 becomes A/B. Here is the calculation: Probability (%) = B / (A+B).
Hooray! We’re making progress. Given a fraction, we can now tell how likely (the probability) what we’re going to bet on will happen. Now let’s figure out how much money can be won using betting odds.
Using Betting Odds to Calculate Winnings.
Betting odds allow you to calculate how much money you will win if you make a bet. Let’s use the same examples as before, with the same replacement of numbers for letters, i.e. 4/1 becomes A/B. Quite simply, for every value of B that you bet, you will win A, plus the return of your stake.
9/1 for every ВЈ1 you bet, you will win ВЈ9. 4/1 for every ВЈ1 you bet, you will win ВЈ4. 1/1 for every ВЈ1 you bet, you will win ВЈ1. 1/4 for every ВЈ4 you bet, you will win ВЈ1.
What About Decimals?
Decimals are far more common on exchanges, such as Betfair, but all leading betting sites do give you the option to view betting odds in this format. They are an alternative to seeing betting odds in the fraction format, and in our opinion, are easier to work out. Here is the calculation: winnings = (odds * stake) – stake. Let’s illustrate it with some examples.
9.0 can be calculated as (9.0 * £10 stake) – £10 stake = £80 winnings. 4.0 can be calculated as (4.0 * £10 stake) – £10 stake = £30 winnings. 2.5 can be calculated as (2.5 * £10 stake) – £10 stake = £15 winnings. 1.25 can be calculated as (1.25 * £10 stake) – £10 stake = £2.50 winnings.

Decimal Odds Versus Fractional Odds.
In truth, one isn’t better than the other but there is certainly a trend emerging towards decimal odds. Historically fractional odds were used in the UK, especially on racetracks and on the high street. There are two key differences. Generally, decimal odds are easier to understand. Based on this, there has a movement to attract more people to horse racing by making it more accessible to the average punter. Ten years ago, if you were going to Cheltenham, all the odds would be displayed as fractional odds. Now, they’re largely all in decimals. The second difference between the formats is that fractional odds only represent winnings, and do not include the returned stake compared to decimals which do include the stake. The transition from fractional odds to decimals largely kicked off with the growing popularity of the betting exchanges such Betfair. How Do Odds Work in Betting?
If you are planning to start betting, be it casino gambling, sports betting, or any other type, it's important to understand the odds. It would be preposterous and absurd to think about placing bets without having a good grip on the main types of betting odds and the ability to read and interpret the various associated formats.
The three main types of betting odds are fractional (British) odds, decimal (European) odds, and American (moneyline) odds. These are simply different ways of presenting the same thing and hold no difference in terms of payouts. This means that a chance (percentage probability) of an event occurring can be converted and presented in any of the aforementioned types of odds.
How Fractional Odds Work.
Fractional odds (aka British odds, UK odds, or traditional odds) are popular among British and Irish bookies. These are typically written with a “slash (/)” or a “hyphen (-),” e.g. 6/1 or 6-1 and announced as “six-to-one.” Fractional odds are used by some of the world’s largest bookmakers, making them the most preferred odds across the globe.
Therefore, the total (potential) return on a stake can be stated as:
For instance, one of the major sports betting websites listed the following fractional odds for futures betting on the team to win the 2017-18 NBA Championship. Below is a selection of the three teams that had the lowest odds of winning.
Golden State Warriors: 10/11 Houston Rockets: 9/4 Cleveland Cavaliers: 7/1.
It can quickly be determined that the Golden State Warriors are the favorites while the odds on Houston and Cleveland winning are longer. That is, one wins only $10 against every $11 wagered on Golden State to be the champions. Meanwhile, one wins $9 against each $4 (i.e. 3.25 times) put at stake for Houston to win, which is a bit less probable. For Cleveland, one wins $7 against each $1 bet.
In the above example, if you bet $100 on Golden State to win, you could make a $90.91 profit [$100 x (10/11)], and could get back your initial stake of $100, resulting in a total payout of $190.91. However, if you wager $100 on Houston to win, you could receive a profit of $225 [$100 x (9/4)], in addition to the $100 initial stake leading to a total payout of $325. The potential profit for a Cleveland win would be even higher, as you could make a profit of $700 [$100 x (7/1)]. With the initial stake of $100 being returned, it would make for a total payout of $800.
How Decimal Odds Work.
Decimal odds (aka European odds, digital odds, or continental odds) are popular in continental Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. These are a bit easier to understand and work with. The favorites and underdogs can be spotted instantaneously by looking at the numbers.
The decimal odds number represents the amount one wins for every $1 wagered. For decimal odds, the number represents the total payout, rather than the profit. In other words, your stake is already included in the decimal number (no need to add back your stake), which makes its total payout calculation easier.
The total (potential) return on a stake can be calculated as:
For instance, one of the renowned betting websites priced the candidates to win the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election. Here, we list the decimal odds for the candidates and the biggest long shot among the candidates listed by the bookmaker.
Donald Trump: 4.00 Joe Biden: 1.3.
These numbers merely represent the amount one could win against each $1 put at stake. Therefore, if one bets $100 on Donald Trump to be re-elected as president, this person could make a total payout of $400 ($100 x 4.00). This amount includes the initial stake of $100, giving a net profit of $300.
Similarly, a bettor could make a total payout of $130 ($100 x 1.3) if they successfully bet $100 on Joe Biden. Deducting $100 from this return gives the bettor the net profit earned.
Reviewing the prices that the bookmaker has set for each candidate, it can be determined that according to the bookmaker, the probability of Biden (favorite) winning the election is higher than that for Trump. The higher the total payout (i.e. the higher the decimal odd), the less probable (and riskier) it is for the listed candidate to win.
How American (Moneyline) Odds Work.
Let’s understand this with the help of an example:

In this matchup, there is a big difference between the two odds, indicating a much higher probability of Duke winning the game and advancing to the next round of the NCAA Tournament.

It was not pretty, but Wolves will not be complaining. A 2-1 result against Arsenal at the Molineux in midweek temporarily arrested their eight-match run without a three-point haul. Despite the nature of the result, Nuno Espirito Santo still has an enormous amount of work to do to extract the maximum from a side that is struggling.
On another day, Arsenal would have been comfortably ahead at half time. But football is a cruel business, and though Wolves still had to rely on a Ruben Neves penalty, and a superb strike from range from compatriot Joao Moutinho, the result cannot mask the fact that Wolves were poor at the back throughout. Arsenal still crafted chances when down to ten men, and even still when down to just nine later on in proceedings.
Something needs to change in the West Midlands; soon. Under normal circumstances, at the very least, Wolves should be more difficult to break down and usually are when in a back-three. But the wheels falling off the bus when transitioned into a back-four given selection issues should be a massive concern for Espirito Santo.
Issues this season are so much more than just having to cope with Raúl Jimenez’s injury, or the sale of Diogo Jota. Willian José is a rather capable temporary centre-forward replacement, while Pedro Neto and Daniel Podence have shown their attacking qualities. Refreshment in midfield in the long term could also be targeted, but at the very least, taking on a very difficult Leicester-side is another acid test on where Wolves currently are, but also if they have reached the end of the line in their current iteration.
Leicester City must continue to avoid the expected decline.
Registering just four points from twelve in the last four matches of the 2019-20 Premier League campaign consigned Leicester City to Europa League football rather than an unexpected dream-return to the Champions League. Many expect the Foxes – rightly or wrongly – to lose steam once again under Brendan Rodgers, especially with the resumption of the Europa League on the horizon.
Once again, Leicester are very much masters of their own destiny. In a Premier League that has never had so much quality from top to bottom, Rodgers must ensure that performance levels remain; especially against sides that are far below them in the table. There are no easy matches in the English top flight these days, not even against the likes of Sheffield United or Fulham; sides that already seemed destined to drop down to the Championship.
On paper, this is the perfect time to play a Wolves outfit that are struggling with their identity on the pitch. But the truth is that many a club are often at their most dangerous when their backs are against the wall in some measure, while it is so easy to lose sight of your performances when you are flying high without a care in the world. The balance must be struck for Leicester, and struck well. Reliance on Jamie Vardy – or the implication of such – must be avoided at all costs, while still highlighting one of the most dangerous goal scorers in recent memory in the Premier League.
With Vardy hopeful of being reintroduced into the matchday XI at the weekend, resumption of service in the final third for Leicester would go a long way to help them stave-off any loss of form. On their day, Leicester are good value for where they currently sit in the table and are determined to prove they belong amongst the elite in England. Three points at the weekend should be seen as the only acceptable outcome for them.

What are betting odds?

If something is statistically less likely to happen, it is given long odds. This means you have the potential to win more than you would on even odds, but the risk of losing is higher.
For example: In the case of 10/1 long odds (or 11.0 in decimal form), you could win ВЈ10 for every ВЈ1 you bet, and therefore your winnings exceed your stake.

Short odds.

How to read betting odds.

Reading odds can be confusing if you’re not familiar with what the different sets of numbers reflect. Here, we explain how to read decimal, fraction, and moneyline odds.
Understanding decimal odds.
The simple rule of thumb with decimal betting odds is the bigger the number, the larger the return will be. For example, decimal odds of 3.75 will result in larger winnings than decimal odds of 1.75.
To work out your winnings from decimal odds, simply multiply the odds by your stake. The resulting number reflects both your winnings and your stake.
For example: If you bet £10 on odds of 3.75, you would return £37.50 – this means you’ll have won £27.50 (£37.50 – your £10 stake).
Understanding fractional odds.
Fractional odds are a more traditional way of displaying odds in the UK. Appearing in fraction form (e.g. 2/1), you must first work out your winnings and then add on your stake in order to determine your total return.

Converting decimal odds to fractions.
Converting decimal betting odds to fractions takes a bit of basic maths knowledge.
First, take your decimal odds and subtract 1 from the number.
For example: If you have decimal odds of 3.75, subtract 1 and you are left with 2.75. These are odds of 2.75/1.
Odds need to be made up of whole numbers, so we need to take 2.75 and turn it into a whole number. The easiest way in this instance is to multiply 2.75 by 100 and move the decimal along two places. This gives us 275/100.
From there, we can work our way to finding the smallest equivalent fraction.
In this case, we can divide our fraction by 25, leaving us with fractional odds of 11/4 – previously 3.75 when presented as a decimal.

п»їNFL Rookie of the Year 2020-21: Award Candidates, Odds and Predictions.
Not every player immediately succeeds upon making the jump from college football to the NFL. However, for some, the transition looks easy.
That was the case for several standout rookies during the 2020 season, as there were quite a few first-year players who had impressive showings in their debut campaign. Two of those rookies will be honored on Saturday, when the Offensive Rookie of the Year and Defensive Rookie of the Year Awards are announced during NFL Honors, which will air at 9 p.m. ET on CBS.
Here's a look at the odds for both rookie awards (via Sports Betting Dime), along with predictions for who will receive each honor.
Offensive Rookie of the Year Odds, Prediction.
Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert: -1200 (bet $1,200 to win $100)
Herbert was the third quarterback selected when he was picked by the Chargers with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft, coming off the board after Joe Burrow (No. 1 to the Cincinnati Bengals) and Tua Tagovailoa (No. 5 to the Miami Dolphins). Yet, it will be the former Oregon quarterback who ends up being the 2020 Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Los Angeles initially began the season with veteran Tyrod Taylor as its starting quarterback. However, Taylor suffered a punctured lung just before the Chargers' Week 2 game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Herbert got the opportunity to start that contest, and he never relinquished the job.
In 15 games, Herbert passed for 4,336 yards, 31 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He set the NFL rookie records for passing yards, passing touchdowns and completions (396).
After the Chargers started 3-9, they ended the season with a four-game winning streak. And while they missed out on the playoffs, Herbert's play provided optimism for the future, as Los Angeles appears to have found a franchise quarterback.
Jefferson and Taylor each had remarkable rookie seasons as well. Jefferson was the Vikings' leading receiver, hauling in 88 passes for 1,400 yards and seven touchdowns in 16 games. Taylor was the Colts' leading rusher, running for 1,169 yards and 11 touchdowns, and he also contributed 36 receptions for 299 yards and a touchdown.
However, it's hard to pick against Herbert, who quickly established himself as a strong NFL quarterback. He passed for more than 300 yards in a game eight times, and he had six games with three or more passing touchdowns (including four straight beginning in Week 4).
Now, Herbert's standout debut season will end with him receiving the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award, beating Jefferson and Taylor by a sizable margin.
Prediction: Herbert wins Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Defensive Rookie of the Year Odds, Prediction.
Washington Football Team DE Chase Young: -375.
Expectations were high for Young, who was selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft. He was the first defensive player to come off the board, and he was joining a Washington team that already had a solid defensive front.
Over 15 games, Young proved he was going to fit in with Washington's other pass rushers quite nicely.
Young quickly proved that he's going to be a defensive playmaker, as he finished his rookie season with 44 tackles, 7.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. He also scored his first career NFL touchdown, scooping up a fumble and returning it 47 yards for a score in Washington's Week 14 win over the San Francisco 49ers.
It wasn't expected for Washington to reach the playoffs this season, but it did, capitalizing on a down year for the NFC East. It overcame a 2-7 start by winning five of its last seven games, and Young played a major role in helping it do so, even being named a team captain heading into Week 16.
There were several other standout defensive rookies around the NFL. Chinn had 117 tackles, a sack, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, an interception and two touchdowns in 15 games for Carolina. Winfield had 94 tackles, three sacks, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and an interception in 16 games for Tampa Bay. And Queen had 106 tackles, three sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, an interception and a touchdown in 16 games for Baltimore.
But Young was the most impressive, becoming a leader for Washington. And even though veteran Ryan Kerrigan may not return to the team next season, Washington is set with Young and 2019 first-round pick Montez Sweat on the edges, potentially for many years to come.
It will be a bit closer than the voting for Offensive Rookie of the Year, but expect Young to receive Defensive Rookie of the Year honors, adding another accolade to his impressive, growing resume.

College Betting Tip: Key numbers are not as important in college football as they are in the NFL. College football games often have larger point spreads, and there’s more parity between teams. Still, finding the best lines by using an odds comparison tool and all the legal US sportsbooks available to you is vital if you want to profit betting against the spread.
College Betting Tip: Moneyline betting in college football is even less popular than it is in the NFL. For a lot of games with larger spreads, moneylines aren’t even available. With public bettors leaning towards favorites, there is generally more value betting on underdogs, specifically underdogs that are getting 2 -6.5 points on the spread.
Total (Over/Under) – Betting on the Over/Under or point total means you’re placing bets on the total number of points scored by both teams. So if a game has a total (or Over/Under) of 65 points before kickoff, you can bet on Over or Under 65 total combined points between the two teams for the entire game. Points scored in overtime are included, which can really rack up in a college football overtime. Additionally, there are point totals for quarters and halves.

Vigorish (vig) or Juice – Ever wonder how sportsbooks turn a profit? It’s the vigorish or juice, i.e., the fee sportsbooks take when sports bettors place wagers. This fee is imbedded in the betting ling, giving sportsbooks a mathematical advantage. Sportsbooks typically have a vig of -110 on both sides of a bet, meaning you have to risk $110 for every $100 you want to win. Taking into account the vigorish, you need to win not half of your bets but at least 52.4% to break even. Parlay – A parlay involves two or more picks, all of which have to win outright to payout. You have a five-team parlay, and all but one game wins? You hit 80% of your bets, but your parlay still loses just the same as if you went 0-for-5. Two-team parlays traditionally pay 2.6-to-1, three-team parlays pay 6-to-1, four-team parlays pay 10-to-1, etc. Though we refer to these as “two-team parlays,” parlays can consist of picks on the point totals and sometimes even props. College Betting Tip: Parlays attract bettors, especially beginning bettors, with large payouts. But don’t be fooled. Unless you’re confident you have a large edge in two or more games, betting parlays will eat away your sports betting bankroll.
Teasers – Like a parlay, teasers require more than one pick, and all picks in your teaser must hit. Teasers are a way college football bettors can move multiple point spreads (or totals) to their favor. Since the points are adjusted for the bettor, teasers do not have the large payouts that parlays do.
College Betting Tip: College football games tend to have larger point totals and spreads than NFL games. You can find point totals anywhere from 60-80 points, especially in a pass-happy conference like the Big 12. College football scores are much more volatile than NFL scores, making college football teasers less advantageous.
Live Betting – Live betting occurs after a game starts. Did you sleep in and miss the kickoff of an early 11 am college football game? Don’t tilt! Most US sportsbooks will have live lines available for you to bet on while the game is still in progress.
College Betting Tip: Your team takes an early lead, but an injury or specific scheme leaves you concerned about your bet? How to read College Football Las Vegas Odds.
Similar to our Money Line and 1st Half Odds, every matchup is listed in order of Rotation and those numbers are preceded by the Date and Time of the College Football game.
The rotation for college football games typically lists them by scheduled starting time, which can lead to some confusion since the number will remain the same even if the games wind up changing due to television networks often shifting around action to present more attractive matchups. Home teams are listed at the bottom and will therefore be your even-numbered squad.
The numbers next to the teams are called Spreads or Point-Spreads .
If there is no favorite or underdog, the line is called pick’em and is represented by (PK). Winner takes it. The amount of points a team is favored by is set by oddsmakers on Sunday afternoons and that figure fluctuates throughout the week based on the amount of money coming in on bets.
Opposite from the spread you’ll find the Total , which represents what oddsmakers believe will be the combined number of points scored between the teams. That number also increases or decreases based on bets coming in on the Over or Under .
How to Bet College Football Las Vegas Odds.
The key to wagering successfully in college football spread betting is to decide early how many points you’re willing to lay with Favorites and to get in at the lowest possible spot.
If you’re going to back the Underdog , make sure you’re getting the most points possible entering the game. The skill in this often requires you to forecast how a game will be wagered since we often see opening lines bet up over the course of the week due to the majority of the money coming in on the favorite.
Of course, getting in too early can often backfire if a better number appears over the course of the week or if injuries that are typically not announced until coaches give status reports on Monday press conferences dramatically alter expectations. There’s also a big rush on betting action just before the kickoff of any game, which means you may be best off waiting until kickoff approaches to get the right number.
Take the 2019 college football Big 12 matchup between Texas-West Virginia as a prime example. The Longhorns opened as an 11.5-point favorite and won 42-31 after the Mountaineers scored the game’s final touchdown with :48 left. West Virginia backers who got in early prevailed on that score, while Texas bettors who guessed wrong and got in too early caught a “bad beat.” Those who waited and laid only 10.5 points still cashed. Get in at the best number!
College Football Opening Line.
Opening Lines in college football are typically set on Sunday afternoons in the current week and you usually see immediate action cause line movement. The Spread is based on a rough projection of a score for every matchup, although oddsmakers have a good idea of what side the betting public will want to bet and usually saddles that team with an additional point or three. The same goes for the Total, which projects the combined number of points expected in a contest.
These numbers are based on simulations that take a number of statistical factors into account in addition to baking in injuries, a homefield advantage that is typically worth three points and any other potential edges. Teams coming off bye weeks are usually given an edge thanks to increased preparation time and fresher bodies. Teams coming in on short rest or that have to travel out of their element typically find themselves penalized in a point spread.
UCLA at Cincinnati (-4)
In the above example, UCLA was made a four-point underdog against Cincinnati in the 2019 season opener for both. The betting public jumped on the team from the higher-regarded conference, perhaps believing that the West-Coast team heading more than halfway across the country was being penalized too harshly and the line closed at 2.5 points. Cincinnati prevailed 24-14. The opening line of 4 was accurate in calling for a larger margin of victory than the closing line, which is where the ‘opener’ ultimately ends up.
VI Consensus College Football Line.
The Total is also available on the VI Consensus line and similarly consists of the current betting line which most frequently among our list of Las Vegas and Global sportsbooks. For an example, in the most recent National Championship between LSU and Clemson , there was significant line fluctuation throughout the two-week lead up. LSU was laying 5.5 to 6 points in multiple locations as the favorite. The battle of Tigers ended with LSU blowing out Clemson 42-25, covering the spread handily.

What do NFL odds look like?
During the college football season, there will be dozens of games on the board most Saturdays. Three types of odds are the most common:
Point spread: The point spread, also called the “side,” evens the playing field in a lopsided matchup.
With this example, bettors backing the underdog New Mexico State need the Aggies to win or keep the losing margin to 35 points or less. Alabama would need to win by 36 or more points for Crimson Tide bettors to cash that wager.
Over/under: These bets, also called the “total,” are simple. The sportsbook sets a line on combined points by both teams, and bettors can take over or under that point total.
Moneyline: This bet removes the point spread, with corresponding odds for the favorite and underdog.
In this example, Ohio State backers would need to lay $400 on the favorite Buckeyes to win $100. A $100 bet on Penn State would return $350, but the Nittany Lions would have to win straight up.

The more skill points you accumulate, the harder it will be to beat the game A.I.
In order to get the pitcher for the A.I. to throw almost everything across the plate, you need to wear them out.
Take as many pitches as you can, working deep into each count. This trick doesn't guarentee a win, but I have yet to get negative points.
When you see the pitcher begin to sweat, an exlamation point will appear over the pitcher's head when a pitch is about to be thrown.
That means its coming right across the plate at 74 MPH. A perfect home run ball if you hit the ball correctly.

You can add more Miis in Parade and audiences. Use Wii Sports to do it:
1. Make about 10 Mii's.
2. Transfer those Mii's to your Wiimote.
3. Delete the Mii's that are transfered to the Wiimote out of the plaza.
5 When given the option of which Mii to use during gameplay choose the option to get the Mii from the Wii Remote.
6. After viewing the Mii's on the Wiimote back out by using the B button.
7. Exit out of Wii Sports and back onto the Wii Menu.
Now check the Mii parade and all 10 of the Miis that were on the Wiimote are in the parade. Now if you dont want the Miis on the Wiimote just delete them off. These Miis will now show up in all Wii Sports games that have an audience.
Hint - 91 Strike.
In the "Power Throws" training game for bowling, you might notice 2 red buttons at the end of the alley - 1 left and 1 right. When you get to the final bowl for 91 pins, you can bowl the ball along the top of the barrier on either side and hit this button.
Move your Mii all the way to the left or right, and turn the aim 2 or 3 clicks towards the barrier. Let go of the ball at the highest point possible, with just a bit of spin to keep the ball on the barrier.
If successful, you will hear a click, the screen will shake and all the pins will fall down.
Hint - Barrier Strike.
For the 'Power Throws' training game in bowling, turn either left or right until there are four red bars pointing in the direction of your choice across the bowling line. This may not always work, especially with the big numbers of pins but this will almost always give you a strike. Feel free to experiment with different numbers of red bars across the bowling line since three and four almost always work for me.

President-elect Joe Biden announced Thursday his choices of Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo to lead the Commerce Department and Boston Mayor Marty Walsh to head the Labor Department.
In fleshing out his economics team, Biden also named:
• Isabel Guzman to head the Small Business Administration. She is a former senior adviser and deputy chief of staff at the agency who is now director of California's Office of the Small Business Advocate.
• Don Graves to serve as deputy secretary of Commerce. Former President Barack Obama put Graves in charge of helping revive Detroit when it grappled with bankruptcy by working with municipal, state, business, and community leaders. Graves is a former executive director of the President’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness and deputy assistant secretary for small business, community development, and housing policy in the Treasury Department.
“This team will help us emerge from the most inequitable economic and jobs crisis in modern history by building an economy where every American is in on the deal,” Biden said in a statement. “They share my belief that the middle class built this country and that unions built the middle class.”
Biden has now named his picks to lead all of the federal departments. A lingering open slot in his Cabinet is head of the CIA.

The Commerce Department handles a variety of functions. One of the most prominent now is the census, which happens every 10 years to reapportion House seats in Congress by population, and carries implications for how federal money is distributed. The 2020 census has been mired in controversy for years because of disputes about who should be counted. The Trump administration sought to not count undocumented immigrants, but Democrats said the Constitution calls for everyone to be counted.
The department, as its name implies, also helps negotiate trade agreements. And the department includes functions such as the National Weather Service and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, which deals with fisheries.
Raimondo, the first woman to become governor of her state, had been considered as a running mate for Biden before his selection of Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.
Raimondo has touted economic growth the state enjoyed before the pandemic. But her potential appointment had been opposed by progressive advocates who were critical of her policies, including her overhaul of the state pension system.
When Raimondo campaigned for reelection in 2018, she faced union opposition and a progressive challenger, who was supported by groups aligned with Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. The advocacy group Demand Progress opposed Raimondo's appointment to any Cabinet post, citing problems with state health insurance programs.
Raimondo became the first woman governor of Rhode Island in 2015. During her administration, the state invested in infrastructure, education and job training. The state became the fourth in the country to offer tuition-free community college to every high school graduate, a national goal for Biden as president.
Raimondo, a former venture-capital executive who co-founded Point Judith Capital, won statewide election as general treasurer in 2010. She overhauled the state pension system, which had a $7 billion unfunded liability. Provisions included eliminating cost-of-living increases, raising the retirement age and moving workers into different retirement accounts, which sparked union opposition.
Raimondo, whose grandfather immigrated from Italy, grew up in Smithfield. She graduated with honors in economics from Harvard University, won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University, where she earned a doctorate, and graduated from Yale Law School.

The Labor Department regulates workplace safety through the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, industries such as the Mine Safety and Health Administration, and contributes to leadership of the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. The department tracks information such as the unemployment rate and wage rates.
One of Biden's priorities in combating the COVID-19 pandemic is to have OSHA develop regulations for workers to return safely to their jobs.
Walsh is a former top union leader. But his selection signals a choice against the diversity in the rest of the Cabinet. Walsh is white, but others considered for the slot included California Labor Secretary Julie Su, an Asian woman, and AFL-CIO chief economist Bill Spriggs, a Black man.
Walsh, a Boston native and lifelong resident, was swiftly embraced by labor unions as one of their own. American Trucking Associations CEO Chris Spear commended Walsh for “a deep understanding of labor issues” and his experience working with building trades as mayor.
“The professional drivers, mechanics, dock workers, dispatchers – the millions of individuals who make up the workforce of our industry - are the critical resource that powers trucking and our economy,” Spear said.
Paul Rinaldi, president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, also praised Walsh as a journeyman member of the Laborers’ International Union of North America and former president of the Boston Building and Construction Trades Council.
“Mayor Walsh will bring to the job the deep understanding of what solidarity truly means, and the critical importance of collective bargaining," Rinaldi said. "Our nation is hurting badly as this COVID-19 pandemic rages. To recover and rebuild, it will take the collective efforts of working men and women nationwide."
As a recovering alcoholic, Walsh has led a lifetime commitment to preventing and treating alcoholism. He earned a degree in political science from Boston College.

Connecticut’s gaming future may have started to take shape Tuesday just as the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe, one of that future’s major players, was announcing its involvement in the reopening of an iconic casino in Puerto Rico.
Rodney Butler, the Mashantucket chairman, had to be in two places at once.
After participating in a news conference in Puerto Rico, Butler took to Zoom to join an informational forum conducted by the state legislature’s Public Safety and Security Committee, which is working on a gaming bill that would legalize online gaming, sports betting and the online sale of lottery tickets.
A compromise, in which each of the state’s four licensed gaming operators could expand their portfolios, is emerging.
The Mashantuckets and the Mohegan Tribe, respective owners of Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun, appear to be willing to ease up on their insistence that only they be allowed to provide online gaming and any form of sports betting in the state. They could be allowed to provide online sports wagering while other in-state operators provide sports betting at retail, or brick-and-mortar, locations.
“Let’s do no harm. Whatever we do, we should do it on a government-to-government basis,” Chuck Bunnell, the Mohegan chief of staff, said during the Zoom hearing. “We’re willing to be reasonable, to talk. That’s what partners do.”
Tribal representatives have been meeting with Gov. Ned Lamont to reach an agreement on gaming expansion. The tribes maintain that sports betting is a casino game and as such is covered by their exclusivity agreements with the state. In talks with the governor, “We’ve been pretty clear that no one new should come into this market,” Bunnell said.
In one scenario, Sportech Venues, which operates a dozen locations at bars and restaurants around the state as well as an online betting service, could be authorized to provide sports betting at its locations but not online.
“I haven’t been convinced that they shouldn’t have an opportunity for sports betting,” Rep. Kurt Vail, R-Stafford, said of Sportech, responding to Bunnell. “Maybe you guys could work something out together.”
Ted Taylor, the Sportech Venues president, rejected the idea, saying online sports betting represents about 80% of the sports betting market, which is dominated by younger males. He said the last thing he’d want is to have patrons at Sportech locations watching sports on multiple screens while placing bets “on somebody else’s app.”
Butler, in a Zoom interview after the hearing, challenged Taylor’s view, saying sports betting could be a boon to brick-and-mortar locations. He said sports betting centers could be developed in places like the XL Center in Hartford and at a location in Bridgeport, as suggested by Sen. Dennis Bradley, D-Bridgeport, the public safety committee co-chairman. The tribes could be willing to partner on such centers, Butler said.
Greg Smith, president of the Connecticut Lottery Corp., said lottery sales have been growing during the pandemic after an initial dip and that authorizing online ticket sales would increase sales further. He said online sales would ensure the lottery stays relevant to young people making increasing use of mobile devices. Rob Simmelkjaer, chairman of the lottery corporation’s board of directors, made a pitch for sports betting, calling the quasi-public agency the ideal operator because it contributes all of the net revenue it generates to the state.
The lottery sells its products at some 3,000 retail locations statewide, not all of which would be suitable as sports-betting sites.
Butler was joined at the news conference in Puerto Rico by the governor of Puerto Rico, Pedro Pierluisi, and Andro Nodarse-LeГіn, founder and chief executive officer of LionGrove, the hospitality investment firm that owns the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel. The Mashantuckets and LionGrove announced they will reopen the El San Juan Casino at the hotel, renaming it the Foxwoods El San Juan Casino.
The casino has been closed since 2016. Its reopening, involving an investment of $12.5 million, will come after $137.5 million worth of renovations to the hotel before and after Hurricane Maria in 2017. The renovations and the reopening of the casino are expected to generate $22 million in economic impact and 360 new jobs, including more than 150 at the casino.
During its heyday in the 1960s, the El San Juan’s Tropicoro nightclub, which the partners also will reopen, drew stars such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Sammy Davis Jr.

п»їThe 5 Worst Prejudices Interfering with Your Sports Betting Results.
The excitement we feel when gambling is inherent in our human psyche. Unfortunately, there are other aspects of the human mind that make people more likely to end up losing money on betting in the long run.

In this article, I’ll lay out five mistakes bettors make based on their cognitive bias and logical fallacies.
1 – The Gambler’s Fallacy.
This will be the most well-known of the bunch. The “gambler’s fallacy” isn’t just observed in sports gambling, it can be seen in nearly all forms of games based on chance. A basic definition of the phenomenon is, “the mistaken belief that if something happens more frequently than normal during a given period, it will happen less frequently in the future.”
If that explanation seems confusing, I’ll put it in real-world terms. The example most frequently used to illustrate the gambler’s fallacy involves flipping a coin. Each time you flip a coin, it’s either going to be heads or tails, a 50% proposition every time. The bias comes in when an individual believes past trials are going to affect future trials.
If you flip a coin five times and it comes up as heads all five times, is it more likely to be tails on the next toss? The answer, if you’re thinking rationally, is no. In fact, it has the exact same chance of being tails as it did on the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth trial before it.
This sports betting bias occurs when you consider the tendency to think that if a team has won (or lost) a few in a row, they’re due for the opposite to happen. In reality, the past doesn’t impact the future. If you’re betting on a final result to happen just because it feels like it hasn’t happened in a while, you’re falling victim to the gambler’s fallacy.
Many a bankroll has been compromised due to this cognitive bias. The solution? Simply evaluate everything independently of all previous games!
2 – Recency Bias.
Sports fans are known for overreacting to the most recent events that take place during the course of a season. It’s not unusual for a single game, or even a single play, to completely change the public opinion of a team or player.
While it’s important to take all information into account when making evaluations, it’s also important that you don’t put too much weight on the most recent event. For example, an NFL team can enter week 5 at 0-4, but if they win big in that fifth game, you can bet it will have a significant impact on their odds the following week.
“Recency bias” isn’t just a theory, it’s reflected in the way the public’s money lands and has a real impact on lines the following week. When you log on to your online sportsbook of choice, be sure to evaluate the game based on the current matchup and not the results of previous games to avoid this sports betting bias.
3 – Outcome Bias.
It’s widely-accepted that sports are inherently a results business. Making the right move or calling the right play doesn’t really matter if it doesn’t achieve the desired outcome. The same isn’t necessarily true in the world of sports gambling.
Allow me to explain. If you’re serious about making money betting on sports, you should be making your plays based on some information other than “it’s just what I was feeling.” With all the information in the world available at your fingertips, it shouldn’t be too difficult to do some quick research and find some numbers that support your plays.
Whether you’re making your bet based on a “fade the public” strategy or some other data, there should always be a method behind your gambling choices. With that being said, there’s no such thing as a perfect way to bet.
The difference between weekend gamblers and professional bettors, or “sharps,” is really just a few percentage points. This means that making smart plays is crucial as the margins are thin in this business. Making the right bets might not win every time, but they’ll win over time.
It’s easy to look back on bets you’ve lost and kick yourself for not making the bet you “know you should’ve made,” but that’s the wrong attitude. Instead, if you’re able to honestly say that you bet with the data on your side, there’s nothing to regret.
“Outcome bias” can lead to serious frustration and cause you to neglect your strategies. Much like a good pitch can still be hit for a home run, a good betting play can still lose.
4 – The Availability Heuristic.
The “availability heuristic” is similar to recency bias, but it has more direct impact on the decisions you make moving forward. It’s also the enemy of research and the hard data that can help you make the most educated decision.
This cognitive bias is to blame for those decisions you make due to your feelings and not actual data. It takes the latest, or most available information, and applies it to the decision-making process.
If you watched the Steelers play two great games during the NFL season and missed the three when they played badly, you’re more likely to have a distorted view of the team. It makes sense to you, because the information you have available in your mind suggests what you saw is the true representation.
The way to combat the availability heuristic is to throw out the idea that your “eye test” is worth more than the numbers. Only utilize your personal feelings when the data leaves you with a 50-50 proposition… And that rarely happens.
5 – The Affect Heuristic.
The “affect heuristic” is one of the most difficult sports betting biases for people to ignore, and they don’t even know it. While you may be unfamiliar with the term, you’re likely all too familiar with the phenomenon.
The affect heuristic is the phenomenon of making decisions based on your emotions instead of reason. It impacts nearly every facet of your life and is one of the hardest biases to overcome.
It’s the reason you bet on your favorite team to win even when it’s wrong. Beyond that, even if your favorite team isn’t involved, you may still be biased towards one side or the other based on your allegiances to certain players.
If you’re a sports fan, you’re always going to fall in love with certain storylines, root for underdog stories, and bet against the dynasties that have had command over leagues for years. However, when you’re putting your hard-earned money on the outcome, you can’t let your emotions cloud your judgement.

Each week during the 2020-21 NFL regular season, The Lines provided a look at movement in betting markets. Both sportsbooks and bettors now can dissect the playoff teams and make determinations on which teams have the best chance to make and win this year’s Super Bowl.
No team that has played in the Wild Card round in the last seven years has made the Super Bowl, though that streak could be snapped soon considering only the No. 1 seeds in each conference now get a bye.
Here is a look at market movement ahead of Wild Card weekend, with six games occurring between Jan. 9-10.

Indianapolis Colts at Buffalo Bills – Saturday, 1:05 p.m. ET.
The Colts (11-5) and Bills (13-3) kick off Saturday’s coverage at 1:05 p.m. ET on CBS. Winds are expected to be up to 10 MPH with temperatures at 32 degrees.
The game opened at Bills -6.5 and briefly hit -7 at DraftKings Sportsbook . However, PointsBet has held steady at the opener of Bills -6.5. PointsBet director of communications Patrick Eichner told TheLines that the Bills are:
Taking 87% of the bets and 77% of the handle The Over/Under dipped from 52 to 51 with 75% of bets and 58% of handle on the Over Buffalo has taken more bets than any other team for Wild Card weekend.
At FanDuel Sportsbook , the gap is even greater in support of the Bills with 80% of the bets and 86% of the money backing Buffalo. And 90% of the moneyline bets are also on Buffalo.

“We are now loaded with Bills money at the current price and I don’t expect that flow to stop,” said DraftKings Sportsbook Director Johnny Avello .
Los Angeles Rams at Seattle Seahawks – Saturday, 4:40 p.m. ET.
The Rams (10-6) and Seahawks (12-4) open the NFC coverage Saturday at 4:40 p.m. on FOX. Light winds with mid-40s temperatures and no precipitation is in the forecast in Seattle.
The NFC West division rivalry is expected to be a close contest with both defenses having a say in the outcome. Each team won low-scoring regular season games at home.
FanDuel Sportsbook has Seattle as a 3-point favorite (-120), and 72% of the bets and money are supporting the Seahawks. PointsBet reports good two-way action on the total so far with 53% of bets on the UNDER and 59% of money wagered on the Over.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Washington Football Team – Saturday, 8:15 p.m. ET.
The biggest point spread on Saturday is on the road favorite Buccaneers (11-5) over the WFT (7-9) at 8:15 p.m. ET on NBC. Temperatures will be just above freezing (35 degrees).
“The Bucs are another top choice for weekend wagering,” Avello told TheLines . “Not a surprise as they have been betting the Bucs since March when it was announced that Tom Brady had found a new home.”
There was a big bet alert from FanDuel Sportsbook on this game, as publicity director Kevin Hennessy reported that, “FanDuel took a $100,000 moneyline bet on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at -400.”
“This year’s Wild Card round boasts an uncommon amount of large spreads, with all six games currently being over a field goal,” said Matt Cosgriff , Director of Trading at BetMGM. “Public money is on most of the favorites. BetMGM will need a few underdogs to win.”
Baltimore Ravens at Tennessee Titans – Sunday, 1:05 p.m. ET.
The Ravens (11-5) and Titans (11-5) play for the second time this season after Tennessee took a 30-24 overtime win at Baltimore in Week 11. Kickoff is at 1:05 p.m. ET on ABC.
Chicago Bears at New Orleans Saints – Sunday, 4:40 p.m. ET.
Kickoff is at 4:40 p.m. ET on CBS. The Saints (12-4) are up to a 10-point favorite and moneyline of -510 at PointsBet.
“It’s absolutely insane that the Bears got in the playoffs,” DraftKings Sportsbook director Johnny Avello said.
PointsBet opened the Saints as -10.5 favorites against the Bears (8-8). But Chicago is supporting its team with Bears bettors in the majority as 59% of the bets and 70% of the handle are on Chicago.
“Much of that has to do with our Illinois betting market,” PointsBet’s Patrick Eichner told TheLines.
FanDuel Sportsbook has 59% of the bets and 64% of the money on the Saints with 92% of the moneyline bets on New Orleans. The total opened at 48 and dropped to 47 at PointsBet, and 73% of bets and 81% of money wagered is on the Over.
Cleveland Browns at Pittsburgh Steelers – Sunday, 8:15 p.m. ET.
The two AFC North rivals meet for a third time. The Browns (11-5) beat the Steelers (12-4) this past Sunday, though Pittsburgh was playing many backups in Week 17. The primetime Sunday night game kicks off at 8:15 p.m. ET on NBC.

Each week, The Lines gives you a look at movement in betting markets in the NFL. The Pittsburgh at Buffalo game is a battle of first place teams and will be key when it comes to playoff positioning. The significant adjustment in odds from the Steelers being favored to being an underdog came after Pittsburgh lost at home to Washington this past Monday, 23-17. Later on Monday, the Bills followed with a win over the 49ers, 34-24. The over/under has dropped to and none of the last five Steelers games have eclipsed the total.
Baltimore (7-5) at Cleveland (9-3) features two of the most run-heavy teams in the NFL. The Ravens are No. 1 in the league in rushing at 169 yards per game and the Browns are No. 2 at 158. Both teams average 32 rushing attempts per game, but it’s the Browns run defense that has performed a little better, allowing 104 rushing yards per game to the Ravens’ 111. The Browns have been playing better over the past month, going 4-0 while the Ravens have fallen flat going 1-3 in their last four games while dealing with more health and coronavirus issues. The Ravens did crush the Cowboys 34-17 this past Tuesday with 294 rushing yards and also buried the Browns 38-6 in Week 1. The data driven analysis site FiveThirtyEight gives the Browns a 92% chance to make the playoffs and the Ravens a 61% chance to make the postseason with Baltimore’s final three games against losing teams Jacksonville, New York Giants and at Cincinnati in Week 17.

Week 15 betting breakdown.
There is just one Week 15 contest between elite teams but it’s a huge one with the two conference favorites expected to make the Super Bowl.
Kansas City (-3) at New Orleans : The top two teams in our current power rankings and favorites to reach the Super Bowl may be the most wagered-on game of the month. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (-500) is now the clear favorite to win the league MVP award, and his stats are off the charts with a league-high 3,815 passing yards along with 31 TD passes and just 2 interceptions. The Chiefs offense is back to No. 1 in the league, averaging 427 yards per game and 6.5 yards per play. Those stats are even stronger over Kansas City’s last three games as they’re averaging 483 yards per game at 7.0 yards per play.
Mahomes tops the QB ratings charts and he’s averaging a yard per pass play more against the blitz this season than a standard pass rush. The Saints pass defense allows 212 yards per game to rank No. 4 in the league and will be the toughest test of the season for Mahomes, who has passed for at least 318 yards in five straight games.
Saints QB Drew Brees ranks No. 3 in quarterback rating, but Brees has missed the last month after suffering 11 broken ribs and a collapsed lung against the 49ers in Week 10. However, Brees is expected to be ready and start against the Chiefs.
“Drew’s the guy and if he says he can go then he’s gonna go,” quarterback Taysom Hill told Pro Football Talk after Sunday’s Week 13 win over the Falcons.
In Brees’ absence, the Saints have relied more on their strength along the line of scrimmage. The Saints defense has held five straight opponents to 16 points or less, and the run defense is No. 2 in the league, allowing just 76 rushing yards per game at 3.3 yards per rush. New Orleans is up to No. 7 in the league in rushing offense (140/game), but over the past three games the Saints have averaged 200 per game on 38.7 rushing attempts per contest. Hill has averaged 58 rushing yards per game, but two of his three starts were against the Falcons’ bottom-tier defense. He passed for 465 yards in those two contests.
Can the Saints slow the Chiefs? Heading into Week 14, the Saints have won nine straight games while the Chiefs have won 22 of their last 23, including the postseason. This Bayou showdown could well be a Super Bowl preview.

The NHRA has just been advised that its Laboratory has achieved a perfect 100% score within the 2020 Horseracing International Laboratory Proficiency Testing Program.
This program is conducted by the Association of Official Racing Chemists according to the prohibited substance detection requirements of the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA).
It is investigated if racing laboratories detect important prohibited and forbidden substance at the required sensitivities in blind, internationally supplied urine and blood specimens. The NHA Laboratory was 100% compliant and correct during such testing.
Related to this program, several batches of negative NHA racing specimens were re-analysed at several overseas racing laboratories during 2020. Such external testing was to investigate a negative presence of prohibited substances.
The tests confirmed that specimens which the NHA Laboratory declared as negative did not contain prohibited substances and there also the NHA Laboratory achieved a 100% score.
While the National Horseracing Authority’s Laboratory maintains strict compliance to the prohibited substance requirements of the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities, is has to also incorporate strict quality compliance in its testing.
The South African National Accreditation System conducted such a compliance assessment (audit) during latter part of 2020, investigating racing quality ILAC-G7 (Accreditation Requirements and Operating Criteria for Horseracing Laboratories) and the international chemical and biological testing laboratories quality standard ISO/IEC 17025.
Subsequent to this assessment process the NHA Laboratory was again re-certified as accredited to the required standards.
The above racing and quality compliance is confirmed by the fact that racing jurisdictions such as France, Hong Kong and England have the confidence in the capabilities of the NHA Laboratory to have it available, when required, to act as a confirmatory analysis laboratory for their positive findings.
Despite its modest size and limited budget, the NHRA Laboratory is internationally respected for its standards and capabilities. It has the demonstrated capability of detecting and confirming the presence of prohibited substances and meets the same lofty standards as the other top equine forensic laboratories in the world.
People involved in racing, both locally and internationally, can be assured that our capabilities are world class in keeping with the ethos of clean and safe racing.

Industry dissatisfaction with a perceived lack of consultation and alleged double standards on the part of the National Horseracing Authority continues to gather momentum, with the recent jockey provincial travel lockdown highlighting simmering tensions.
Almost every stakeholder that communicates with us has some bone to pick or anger to vent with the NHRA. Maybe that is how the regulator is meant to roll. But given the manner in which they handle media inquiries and communication, it is probably not difficult either to understand why.
The Sporting Post wrote to the National Horseracing Authority on 11 January requesting them to clarify how they intend policing the specific condition of the January lockdown in relation to the relocation and provincial domicile of the riders.
The issue has been the subject of a host of inquiries on social media and other platforms, and on 25 January we again addressed the regulator, suggesting it surely would make sense to just remove the seemingly flawed commitment to police the physical domicile.
The wording is admittedly a touch ambiguous and vague:
Riders are to be domiciled in one region of their choice for the month of January 2021 and are to relocate to this Province if so required , prior to 4 January 2021. Once a Rider has ridden in a Centre from 4 January 2021, he will be limited to ride in the Centre for the remainder of the month.
Legal opinion canvassed by the Sporting Post indicates that, while the NHRA are acting within the ambit of their mandate in terms of setting rules during the lockdown step-up, they cannot lawfully prevent licenced individuals from returning to their families in other provinces during their own time.
Interprovincial travel, including by air, is currently permitted in South Africa.
Against the background of the restrictive travel protocols and the general unhappiness, with Met day upon us we hope that the NHRA are not going to open themselves up to more criticism by shipping in the traditional ‘guest’ Stipes from other provinces to back up their very capable colleagues down in the Cape.
With 131 runners over the 12 races at an average of just under 11 runners per race, the Met meeting, while a high profile one with three Gr1 features, surely hardly demands additional policing resources.
Which also raises the subject of the use of the virtual boardroom.
The facility, introduced in September 2019, enables Officials based at the NHRA Head Office to have real-time and review access to the live video patrol footage of any racemeeting countrywide, and to actively participate as members of a Stipendiary Board at the race meeting.
The facility was to be used for training purposes and to bolster the respective Stipendiary Boards.
In October 2020 we asked the NHRA about the virtual boardroom, and specifically:
Whether it was being used? How often, and in what cases?
The official reply was that it was indicated in the Stipes report when the VB was used. That’s as clear as mud.
The parlous state of both the NHRA’s and the broader industry’s finances, are another reason to argue that importing additional Stipes on Saturday at Kenilworth is an unnecessary expense – never mind a reckless move in the current pandemic, where travel and movement should really be restricted – unless absolutely essential.
The Sporting Post has also been informed that a groundswell of support is building for the industry to start reviewing individual cost-centres. Talk is cheap but that’s probably years overdue.

What do those advovates that sit on the board do for the NHA? And do they get a fee of sorts for performing whichever duties they perform? And the rest of the esteemed board? Do they give advice, approve decisions, make new rules for vee moodley19 to enforce? Or are they just figureheads of an old institution who gather around a boardroam table once in a while to compare sports models, holiday homes, talk **edited, drink whiskey and discuss international travel plans?
I’m sad to see the Sporting Post take up the cudgel for a small group of elite individuals rather than the greater good.
The NHRA has been clear that the jockey room is an extremely vulnerable nexus point for all of horseracing in South Africa. If a jockey who has recently ridden at a meeting gets a call from anyone they know who has tested positive for Covid, then all those riders should go home and isolate with their families.
The NHRA plan limits the possibility of multiple Jockey’s Rooms from suffering the same fate simultaneously by ring-fencing them off “by the month”. Common sense dictates that it’s not clever to let a Cape Town jockey return from a Friday PE meeting and ride with all the CT designated jockeys 4 hours later.
It goes without saying, or apparently not, that if a jockey selected CT for January, that it would not be ideal for said jockey to commute by plane from another province, thereby risking peers and the whole show for their individual gain.
Last month the NHRA found itself in hot water when it explained the obvious point of vulnerability that the jockeys, through no fault of their own, cause for the whole of racing as compared to other essential service providers.
That jockeys have to choose a province for a month as a condition of participation has the unintended benefit favouring jockeys who might not have had an opportunity to ride if the travelling jockeys were able to travel.
Suddenly rides are available because popular busy jockeys are unavailable. What this means is that the complaining jockeys for whom the Sporting Post now rallies, are the handful of rich and successful jetsetters, who are pissed at a temporary inconvenience slowing them down from “having it all, every which way”.
It really is time to stop bashing the NHRA and making the job thankless. Owners and the (few other) members of the NHRA, can vote in a new committee and change any of the rules that are perpetually moaned about. Funny enough, the owners who make the rules show zero interest in changing them.
H.L. Mencken, writer, cynic and well known as the freethinking “Sage of Baltimore” said in 1915, “People deserve the government they get, and they deserve to get it good and hard.”
Now that we’re on to quotes, how about this one: “Criticism may not be agreeable, but it is necessary. It fulfills the same function as pain in the human body; it calls attention to the development of an unhealthy state of things. If it is heeded in time, danger may be averted; if it is suppressed, a fatal distemper may develop.” – Winston Churchill.
Tony I am in agreement with your observations and comments in respect of not permitting any jockey travel at this point , however , your attack on S.P. is unwarranted as the article mentions many other shortcomings at this august body such as this V.B. that I have yet to see in action and stipes travelling to the Met not only in these COVID times but for no reason at all as the fields are generally very small and therefore that decision is ill considered !
May I make one point in respect of the N.H.R.A. and objections :
1. The lodging of an objection is a very serious matter in horse racing and yet when one is lodged all we hear is objection upheld / overruled and the customers have to read a future stipes report to glean any further information and insights. 2. This is just not acceptable as all the audio and visuals are available on course ( or I assume this V.B. ) so after every objection the outcome must immediately be explained to the customers on Tellytrack by a stipe with the aid of the patrol films as to how and why they have come to their decision.
For this lack of transparency and action the blame must be laid at the top which is the C.E.O. as he has had a few years to ensure that objections are aired on Tellytrack and clearly explained to the viewership.
My final point is that the N.H.R.A. in particular and the horse racing industry in general require a Public Relations Officer to whose office all questions / matters concerning their customers can be addressed. At present pertinent and justified questions / matters are just ignored by the industry which leaves their customers feeling frustrated and taken for granted leading to the above article by the S.P. ?

New Agreement Provides NHRA its Biggest Television Platform in the Sport’s History.
GLENDORA, Calif. (Sept. 17, 2020) – The National Hot Rod Association and FOX Sports have announced a multi-year extension of their agreement to telecast all NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing series competitions across FOX, FS1 and FS2 well into this decade. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
“FOX is thrilled to extend our relationship with the NHRA as we enhance our coverage for drag racing fans,” said Mark Silverman, President, National Networks, FOX Sports. “The NHRA on FOX has achieved record audiences for the sport, and we look forward to working with the NHRA to continue to expand the audience and grow the sport beyond the middle of this decade.”
The NHRA and FOX relationship began in 2016. The updated deal will see NHRA and FOX Sports continue collaboration in the production and telecasting of NHRA competition in the United States and Canada, including expanded coverage on the FOX broadcast network and FS1, an NFL adjacent event, and five hours of Finals coverage at the NHRA U.S. Nationals over Labor Day Weekend each year.
“The FOX broadcast team understands motorsports and consistently delivers an incredible production to racing fans across the globe,” said Glen Cromwell, President of the NHRA. “With expanded coverage on the Fox broadcast network and FS1, and an NFL adjacent event, we think we’ll not only bring our fans the drag racing coverage they expect but also ignite entirely new NHRA fans over the next years.”
The multi-year extension continues FOX carriage of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, Lucas Oil Sportsman, and E3 Spark Plugs Pro Mod Series on FS1 and FS2 and multiple encore telecasts of all events designed to enable motorsports fans to watch the NHRA at their convenience. The NHRA and FOX will each market advertisements in NHRA programming to NHRA national sponsors, race sponsors, and other advertisers.

A good NHL player knows the various types of bets available and how each of them works. Gone are the days where you could only place a wager on who would win the match. Most of the sportsbook platforms today offer several options when it comes to betting.
But before we talk about the different bet types available in the National Hockey League, we want you to understand something important. You don’t have to make all of these bets just because there are various types to choose from. You can start with only one kind of bet and then try others if you see an opportunity.

MONEYLINE BETS.
The most common and popular type of bet in NHL (National Hockey League) sports betting is the moneyline bet. This category of betting is where a person places a bet on who will win a game. You win the bet when the team you chose wins the match.
However, these moneyline bets have different payouts. Sportsbooks will pay bettors less money for making the right pick on an NHL team that is favored to win by oddsmakers. On the other hand, betting on the underdog will net you more money.
Just remember that this is just the rule of thumb. NHL lines can still change depending on how other people decide to bet.
What’s important is that bettors understand that the money they earn is based on the probability of a team winning. It’s not possible to get even money on all of the bets you make. Moneyline bets in the NHL operate the same way as in other major sports like in the NBA, NFL, MLB, NASCAR, UFC, and even in some esports.
PUCK LINE BETS.
Sports betting on puck lines work the same as a moneyline. The main difference here is that a team has to win by more than 1.5 goals or lose by fewer than that.
Teams that are the favorite have to win by more than 1.5 goals in a puck line bet. Meanwhile, the underdog can lose the game by 1.5 goals or fewer and still win the wager made on them. The NHL odds for payout will be adjusted but not as much as a moneyline.

Let’s say the Tampa Bay Lightning has a matchup against the New York Rangers. The Lightning squad is considered the favorite sitting at -220 on the moneyline. The following puck line betting odds for this setup are as follows:
Betting on the Lightning on the puck line will net you higher than even money. Since there are no half goals in the NHL, they need to win their match by at least two goals for you to win the bet.
Now that you know what a puck line bet looks like, we can compare its payouts with a moneyline bet to see how they differ.
Let’s say you bet $100 on the Lightning on the moneyline. If you win, you’d get $45.45 in profit. The team only has to win their game for you to win the bet.
On the other hand, betting on the Lightning via the puck line will get you a $133 in profit. However, the Lightning must win their match by at least two goals for your bet to win.
See the difference? You’ll be getting way more money when you bet on favorites with a puck line. The only catch is that your team has to win equal or more than the set amount of goals.
Making a puck line bet is great if you believe a team will win decisively. If you think they are just going to squeak past a win, then you’re better off going the moneyline.
OVER/UNDER BETS.
An over/under in the NHL is a wager on whether or not a team can achieve a certain amount of total goals. In other sports betting categories, this designated number can change, yet the payout odds remain the same.
In the NHL, this over/under line will always be 5.5 goals, with the payout betting odds shifting to accommodate line changes.
Take for example the over/under odds for the Edmonton Oilers and the Montreal Canadiens are as follows:
As you can see, each total is presented as half goal numbers, which is done to prevent ties. If there’s a good chance that more goals are going to be scored in the match, the payout odds will scale to pay better for those betting on the under. If fewer, the odds will change to pay more for the over. The over/under number will always stay at 5.5.
To win in this kind of bet, the bettor must precisely predict the total number of goals in a game for the two teams. It doesn’t matter if one side wins, goalies score all of the goals, or if both teams score. What matters is the total number of goals that are scored.
If you choose the right side, then you win the bet.
PROP BETS.
This is a proposition bet with a wager included. If you bet that a friend won’t be able to finish their drink in 10 seconds, then you’ve made a prop bet. Prop bets, just like parlay bets, are quite fun and can also be a source of profit when done right.
There are plenty of prop betting options sportsbooks offer on NHL games. In fact, there are two categories for it – skilled and unskilled.
In skilled prop bets, these are bets that let you use your knowledge on stats and experience to improve your chances of winning. On the other hand, unskilled prop bets are pretty much just left up to chance. It doesn’t matter how informed you are, the chances of choosing a winning side won’t change.
If you want to be profitable, you might want to stick to skilled prop bets. The unskilled prop bets are more for fun than for gaining money.

New York Online Sports Betting: Gov. Andrew Cuomo Fully On Board, But Wants Lottery Model.

UPDATE, 12:30 p.m. ET: Cuomo said he wants to run sports betting through the state lottery, and not casinos. That’s led to a disastrous one-operator model in places like Washington D.C., which has struggled to generate much revenue.
A lottery model means only one sportsbook would operate, leading to less competition, worse pricing for consumers and little to no innovation.

Gaming lawyer Daniel Wallach said the lottery model isn’t possible under the state’s constitution, though.

Operators of course favor a model where they can partner with casinos, as do most consumers.
“We are encouraged by Governor Cuomo’s most recent statements regarding sports betting in New York. We are keenly interested in reviewing the details of the proposal and look forward to legislation that creates a competitive mobile marketplace,” Matt King, CEO, FanDuel Group said.
“We have seen in other states that a model with competition among experienced operators is critical to maximizing state tax receipts and consumer choice. We look forward to working with the Administration and the New York State legislature to bring mobile sports betting to the residents of our home state in a manner where everyone wins.”

ORIGINAL STORY: Well, it finally happened.
Pressure of neighboring New Jersey turning into the new sports gambling capitol of the nation combined with budgetary issues from COVID-19 have led to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo finally embracing mobile sports betting in the Big Apple.
The details are not yet clear, but Cuomo acknowledged he would finally address the fact that New York had not embraced mobile sports betting. A statement from Cuomo was published in the New York Daily News early Wednesday morning.
“New York has the potential to be the largest sports wagering market in the United States, and by legalizing online sports betting we aim to keep millions of dollars in tax revenue here at home, which will only strengthen our ability to rebuild from the COVID-19 crisis,” Cuomo said.
Just last month, Cuomo in a news conference acknowledged sports betting as a way to close the budget gap for the very first time.
New York State senator Joe Addabbo has been imploring Cuomo’s aids to take up sports betting handle, as New Jersey is set to break the all-time yearly record when final numbers are reported next week. The previous record of $5.3 billion was set by Nevada in 2019.
In February 2020, FanDuel and DraftKings, who were lobbying the state to allow online betting, proposed scenarios of taxation that, according to research firm Eilers & Krejcik, would generate more than $200 million for the state. Without mobile, the firm said that the state was realizing just 5% of its full potential. DraftKings’ stock was up more than 6% in pre-market trading on the news Wednesday.
“I’m thankful for the Governor moving mobile sports betting in New York closer to crossing the goal line,” Addabbo told The Action Network. “I now await the details.”
Four upstate casinos had already been given approval to take sports bets when the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act was rolled back by the Supreme Court in May 2018, giving the states the right to decide whether they wanted to legalize sports gambling.
Despite pleas, Cuomo decided not to add any new revenue generators to the 2020 budget, meaning that mobile sports gambling was not an option. That left even more money on the table due to COVID-19 physical restrictions at retail locations.
In November, New Jersey generated more than $930 million in sports bets, with more than 90% of it bet online.
New York does not report monthly sports betting handle, but because there is no mobile betting, the state has been passed in revenue by New Jersey, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana, Colorado and others.
There are no constitutional issues with mobile sports betting in New York, so there would not be a big overhaul to any bills needed, Addabbo said. This would be solved by putting servers for mobile betting at the retail locations that already are approved mobile betting operators.
So while there’s no firm timeline for online betting to launch, there isn’t a ton standing in the way with Cuomo on board.
“Those are some of the details that I hope to work with the Governor’s office in the coming days. I’m hopeful his administration is just as enthusiastic and energetic about implementing mobile sports betting in our state as I am,” Addabbo said.
The four casinos already approved in update NY would be the first in line, and the state could immediately grant three more licenses that can be expedited.
There are a few natural fits for immediate operators.
BetMGM, since Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway is owned and operated by MGM. DraftKings, which has a deal with Resorts World in New Jersey and currently runs retail betting at del Lago Resort & Casino in Waterloo, N.Y. FanDuel already runs the retail sportsbook at Tioga Downs in Nichols, N.Y. Rush Street Gaming, owners of Rivers Casino & Resort Schenectady, and online operator BetRivers. Fox Bet has a deal with the Mohawk Tribe, which runs the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort in Hogansburg. Caesars struck a deal with the Oneida Tribe, which operates Turning Stone.
New York’s initial 2020 budget, which did not include any new sources of revenue, including sports betting, sought to account for a $7 billion budget deficit. But due to COVID-19, the shortfall rose to more than $17 billion and Cuomo said it was closer $50 billion when considering deficits for others, such as local municipalities, including the MTA.
